1977 Grad Unveils Painting of "A New Day in Arcanum"

By Roger Snell
Arcanum's town hall and water tower are the heart of this Ohio town of fewer than 2,000 residents.

The news tugged at my heart this summer that the building was being vacated and in danger of being lost. I felt strong emotions as I tackled the most detailed and complex painting I have attempted.

After two months of painting at least an hour a day, there was news that an Arcanum Preservation group was being formed to save this building. I immediately felt chills and knew I was inspired to work on this for a reason. I later learned that members of this preservation effort include some of my classmates like Bev Rench and Holly Weaver.

As a 1977 Arcanum High School graduate, I moved on to other jobs. You can leave Arcanum, but Arcanum never leaves you. Our class was the first to have 100 graduates, so we knew each other well and many of us still are in contact.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, Sutton's in Arcanum announced they will display and sell this original painting, with a portion of profits benefiting the non-profit Arcanum Preservation Society now forming to save the building. Members of this new group attended the unveiling of "A New Day in Arcanum."

The original, acrylic painting is 22" x 28" on canvas (framed) for $800. Details about prints, mugs, t shirts and other memorabilia with this image will be posted here for those who cannot afford the original.

Three generations of Suttons have kept this neighborhood grocery running in Arcanum since 1934, including another of my 1977 classmates,  Lori Markland Sutton, who can usually be found at the store's checkout line. Lori's and Kirby's daughter Shala and son-in-law Josh Urlage represent the fourth generation of family members running the store.

I am donating 10 percent of all of my profits to Arcanum Preservation as soon as non-profit status is finalized. Your purchase will help preserve this icon of Arcanum.
