This was supposed to be an oil portrait of granddaughter Starlight and was meant to express emotions of “Read to me, Grandpa.” Instead, the emotion triggered in the family was laughter. It is necessary to have honest feedback about your paintings. Brutally honest feedback is never lacking in my family. You will be greatly rewarded if you watch all the way to the final 3 minutes. Laughter and a lesson are guaranteed at the end. I might be the only artist who shows the misses and not just the hits. Kentucky Appalachia Outdoor Painters gathered in Red River Gorge, which is like the mini-Grand Canyon of the East and in the heart of the mountains. The natural, undeveloped beauty of this area draws visitors from all over the country. In fact, we had chats with visitors from Alabama and the Carolinas during our paint-out at the Gladie Visitor Center. We tried something different this time and blended it with a cookout, too. This is what makes these social gatherings so special, safe, outdoors, even amid a pandemic where all of us were cooped up for more than one year. A studio oil painting from a gouache sketch and photo on location at Hilton Head Island in May of this year. This is my second sunrise painting from the trip, both done in large scale with nice frames. The time lapse covers three days of painting in just over three minutes. More than 30 plein air paintings on location this year have really helped me improve, and I look forward to doing more studio work during the winter months. We return to the Kentucky River at Cummins Ferry RV Resort and Marina with Plein Air Artists of Central Kentucky. Our host is resort co-owner and artist Ken Garcia who spoiled us with food and homemade cookies shaped like an artist palette of colors with a pretzel as the paintbrush. My plein air in oil focused on the bright reflections of the limestone palisade. Watercolor artists Pat Williams and Fran Fens are shown and the oil work of Donna Forgacs and Karen Roland. [...]
From plein air to studio, this is the third and final segment of the making of this oil painting. I did several sketches and an oil study on location in May. Rainy days gave me the studio time to bring this indoors in a much larger work. The dunes really are that blue and purple, and I spent the most time on trying to get those values and color variations right.
