In this special episode of Painting Kentucky, Buddhist monks create world peace art one colorful grain of sand at a time. They spent a few days working on this in August at the Paul Sawyier library that was named for a Frankfort artist who painted most of his watercolors en plein air all around town and from a houseboat on the Kentucky River.The sand art honors all of the major religions in a prayer for harmony and unity. We finally had a cool breeze and low humidity during this third visit in three weeks to Henry Botts Nature Park in Mt. Sterling, Ky.This time I put away the oils and got out the pastels because I was going to deal with all the colors of wildflowers. Pastel is great because the specific, rich color is already mixed for you.I ventured out of the shade or shadows this third time and went down to the popular artist hangout in the wildflower area.Painting flowers is so much harder for me than it looks. The empty park bench overlooing the great view at this Kentucky park is relaxing. Until you try to paint it.What a challenge to get those legs and seat slats in perspective. I spent more time on the bench than all the rest of the painting combined.Kentucky Appalachia Outdoor Painters returned to the Henry Botts Nature Park for a second week in a row because we loved all the possible painting scenes.
