The Fake League Baseball sim of the 2020 season

Using Out of the Park Baseball and the actual 2020 rosters, here are the sim results for my friends who follow the Angels, Astros, Brewers, Cards, Cubs, Indians, and Reds.

And while you're on this web site, look around.

The final sim takes us to REAL opening day on July 23

The Dodgers and Braves were running away with the fake season through 102 games. Either they will get off to a hot start in the real short season of 60 games and never look back, or they will lament what might have been.

The Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox are among the surprises in the first 102 games of the pandemic-interrupted season. The Angels caught and passed the overwhelmingly favored Houston Astros by the last few days of the fake 2020 season sim.

Everything else looks like the pre-season projections.

The Reds should be very happy about a do-over, still playing below .500 even with new payroll spending topping $100 million. Bright spots for the Reds are that Jesse Winker and Mike Moustakas were in the top three in the NL for on-base and slugging percentage, a very solid measurement of overall offensive performance.

What follows are some key screen shots of favorite teams of my followers on this page. This may be the last sim of 2020. However, OOTP is working on programming the new rules, schedules, post-season configuration and expanded rosters. I might update my real 2020 season projections if they finish that update soon.

A lot has happened in two weeks. The Reds went from first to worst. The Cubs are in first. Altuve is still hitting .400. Trout hit 5 homers in 7 games. Atlanta is a remarkable 33-12, .733 win percentage, and yet the Phillies are right behind them. Lexington's Walker Buehler has some of the best pitching stats but is 1-5 with absolutely no run support.

The Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago White Sox (what?) are winning more than 70 percent of their games so far in this fake season.

The Angels are hanging on to a half-game lead over the Astros while the Reds fell from first with a current six-game losing streak. Somehow the Pirates unexpectedly are holding on to first.

The Cards, Cubs, and Brewers are all below .500, but that means even the worst in the NL Central is only 2.5 games back.

Christian Yelich continues to play MVP baseball with a .372 batting average, but the Cubs Albert Almora Jr. is chasing at .353.

In the American League, Houston's Altuve is batting .369, and teammate Bregman leads in homers with 13.

Reds: Sonny Gray's no-hitter and the sweep of New York at Yankee Stadium on Sunday moved the Reds into first, and they held on all week. Castellanos and Moustakas are giving the offensive punch justified by the big payouts. Moustakas leads the team with 7 homers, and Castellanos is tied for second with Suarez with 5 homers. The Reds are winning despite being 7th in runs scored and runs allowed. The Reds are 4-2 for the week, 15-11 for the season, and a half-game ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central.

Angels: The Angels end the week tied for first with the Astros at 18-9. Mike Trout is no surprise leading the team at .327 and 9 HR, and second with 17 RBI behind Rendon's 23 RBI. The big surprise is Albert Pujols, .323, 5 HR, 15 RBI. Ohtani came out of Wednesday's game in the 4th inning with a sore arm and will be out of the rotation for three weeks; the Angels beat the White Sox 6-3 despite the loss of Ohtani. His 4-1 record and 2.57 ERA were leading the team, and the reason for the hot start. But #2 starter Andrew Heaney is equal to the task at 4-1, 3.52. The team is 4-2 for the week. Heaney's 3-hitter on Saturday beat the White Sox 3-0.

Astros: Jose Altuve is still hitting near .400 and has a current 20-game hitting streak, with power, 8 HRs, driving in 21. The pitching staff is awesome when ace Justin Verlander is the third best in the rotation: Williams Perez, 3-0, 0.86; Lance McCullers Jr., 4-0, 2.52; Verlander 2-2, 3.93. The Astros are tied for first with the Angels at 18-9 and are 6-1 this week. The game of the week was Sunday when Altuve hit two homers and drove in four in the 14-5 win against the Angels.

Cards: The Cards have dropped to last place, and everything is going wrong. Offense and pitching are among the worst in the National League. No player is hitting near .300. There is hope, despite the 11-15 record, because the Cards are only 4 games behind the Reds. The team was 1-4 for the week. The only win came Tuesday when Wong delivered a 12th-inning RBI on a double against the Reds; final score 3-2.

Brewers: Christian Yelich is repeating his MVP heroics, but he can't carry the 12-15 team alone. Yelich is hitting .413, with 7 HRs, and 21 RBI, Triple Crown leader on the roster. The pitching is awful, almost as bad as the Cubs. The 4-2 record this week may be a sign of better things to come. Both losses came Wednesday during a double-header with the surprising Pirates.

Cubs: The 2-4 record this week has kept the Cubs out of contention so far. Offense is not the problem, 5th in the NL, with the entire lineup on fire except for Rizzo. Almora .342; Bryant .340; Baez and Schwarber 7 HRs; Baez 21 RBI. The pitching is awful from top to bottom, and it is costing the team.

Buehler, Henry Clay H.S., Lexington: He lost Thursday and is 0-3 with no run support for his excellent ERA of 2.45.

JT Riddle, Western Hills H.S., Frankfort: He is backing up Kevin Newman and is unlikely to take his job away. Newman is hitting .345 with 3 HR and 15 RBI. Riddle is hitting .159 in 9 starts, with only 7 hits in 44 at bats. He has struck out 18 times.

The Angels won their sixth straight game and now have the best record in baseball at 14-6. Ohtani got the 2-1 win and is almost unhittable so far (4-1, 1.99 ERA). The Angels beat the Astros and added to a 2-game lead over them.

The Reds won their second game against the Yankees and are on the verge of sweeping at the home of Aaron Judge. Votto and Senzel homered in the 10-1 win as DeSclafani continued to surprise as the best on the pitching staff so far (3-1, 3.42 ERA).

Cleveland beat Boston 7-5 after last night's game was snowed out at Fenway. Clevinger got the win, and Santana homered for the Tribe.

In the nation's capital, it took 13 innings for the Cubs to beat the Nats, 7-6. Schwarber, Contreras, and Bryant homered. But the final inning was decided by small ball with a single by Contreras, a walk to Happ, and a go-ahead single from Kipnis.

The Mets beat the Brewers again, 7-4, as Milwaukee slips to last place at 8-13.

After Wainwright's three-hitter on Friday, the Cardinals pounded the Rockies, 9-7, on 19 hits. Murphy had two homers for the Rockies.

Walker Buehler, of Henry Clay High School in Lexington, was the player of the game in his 1-0 win over the Pirates. He gave up four hits, no runs, and struck out 8 in 7.1 innings. Buehler has a 1.76 ERA, but is 0-2 for the season because of a total lack of run support. Jansen actually got the win in relief.

Friday, April 17:

St. Louis Redbird Adam Wainwright was the star of today's one-day sim in Fake League Baseball.
He went 9 innings and allowed no runs on 3 hits in a 5-0 win over Colorado. But here's the craziest part of all. The Cards scored all 5 runs in the 10th inning to get the win, desperately needed after a 9-11 start and 4th place in the NL Central. Dejong and Goldschmidt drove in all five with their homers in the 10th. The wind was blowing in at 10 mph and the ball was not carrying in 49-degree weather, but somebody forgot to tell the Cards.

The Reds pulled to 10-9 by beating the Yankees in interleague play. The Yankees are off to a slow 8-11 start. Tyler Mahle picked up his first win in the 5-3 victory. Moustakes and Castellanos each hit their 4th home runs of the year. Stanton hit his 7th and Torres his 8th (AL leader) for the Yankees. The Reds are in second place, 1.5 games behind the Pirates.

The two best teams in the AL faced each other and the Angels prevailed 7-3 over the Astros. Upton and Castro homered for LA. Tucker, Altuve (.400), and Correa homered for Hou. The win puts the Angels one game ahead of the Astros in the AL West.

The Indians and Red Sox got snowed out. The game was rescheduled for tomorrow.

The Cubs were pounded 9-3 by the Nationals in Washington and fell to .500 at 10-10, but that's still good enough for third place and only 2 games behind in the highly charged NL Central.

The Brewers lost to the Mets, 6-2, and are tanking at 8-12. DeGrom was player of the game, and his 4 wins lead the NL.
