53: Goddard Covered Bridge, plein air painting in pastel
The shadow of the church and cross pointed toward this historic covered bridge in Goddard, Kentucky, and that immediately inspired my composition.
I started with an underpainting of gouache and then hit the highlights and details with pastel. I walk you through the stages and progress of the painting, including a wipeout of the house after fiddling with it for about 30 minutes and realizing it was in the wrong spot.
I no longer worry about completely wiping out something that is not working and then trying again. I'm very happy with the result.
Debbie Billips joined me as a member of Kentucky Appalachia Outdoor Painters. She focused on the church and rendered a finished work that Monet would be happy to sign.
Goddard Covered Bridge is the last Kentucky bridge to feature this special lattice-work of lumber connected by wooden pegs.
