Something memorable always seems to happen when painting outdoors, and this was another pleasant surprise.
The young Robertson family showed up to fish and I immediately knew this would add the focal point I needed for my landscape in oil.
Honoring a challenge by artist Debbie Billips, I covered over a previous painting that I never finished. I sanded the oil painting down and put in the big shapes and values of the rolling hills and pond in oil.
I think you'll sense the laughter and joy we have painting together as Kentucky Appalachia Outdoor Painters.
The scene is at Henry Botts Nature Park in Mt. Sterling, Ky.
I loved the rolling hills in the background and the pond in the foreground.
But what made this spot special for me was when  young husband Patrick, wife Randi and son Tyler showed up to go fishing.
Although they're just dots in the painting, I wanted to keep practicing where I can work figures into a painting.
With their permission, the video includes a little interview with them.
The great thing about outdoor painting is the unexpected that creates memories. Whenever I look at this painting, I'll remember the great weather, surrounded by artist friends, and this young family enjoying the beauty of Kentucky.
